๐ ๏ธ Tools for Caring for a Toy Poodle
A good result doesn’t depend only on technique…๐ but also on the tools you use.
And here’s an important point: ๐ NOT everything sold for dogs is suitable for a Toy Poodle.
Our advice is aimed at owners, ๐ not professional groomers.
๐ก We focus on practical, comfortable, real-life solutions for everyday care at home. In many pet stores, considering the size of the dog and the nature of its coat, ๐ finding truly suitable tools is almost a mission impossible.
๐ And here’s a simple truth: ๐ it’s much better to spend an hour researching properly online๐ and enjoy comfort for the entire life of your dog, than to buy something quickly “just to get by”๐ and end up replacing it several times because it’s uncomfortable.
๐ In the end, it costs more.
๐ฉ Toy Poodles live many years, ๐ so it makes sense to invest in good-quality tools: ๐ slightly more expensive than basic ones,
but more comfortable and much more durable.
๐ก And one more important thing: ๐ we don’t sell anything. ๐ we simply give advice.
๐ And when you’ve worked with many Toy Poodles for many years…experience gives you the right to recommend.
๐ฉ Brushes (Slicker Brushes)
๐ This is an important point: having two slicker brushes is not a luxury… it’s simply the most practical setup.
โ๏ธ One classic slicker — small size. โ๏ธ One triangular slicker — also small, perfect for tricky areas (armpits, behind the ears, etc.)
๐ With these two, you cover everything.
โ How to choose a good slicker brush?
Here’s where the filtering begins ๐
โ “2-in-1” brushes (bristle brush on one side, slicker on the other) ๐ eliminate them immediately.
โ Large slickers with short, slippery handles ๐ uncomfortable, no control.
โ Self-cleaning slicker brushes ๐ sound great… but in practice, we didn’t like them.
โ๏ธ What actually works:
๐ Small size (the smallest available). ๐ A handle longer than the brush head. ๐ Even better if it has a gel-filled grip. ๐ก Result:
๐ your hand doesn’t get tired, ๐ you work with more precision.
โ Very important:
โ Slicker brushes with plastic tips on the pins — PROHIBITED. ๐ They damage the coat, ๐ don’t work properly, ๐ and actually pull out the hair.๐ก And here’s the key point: ๐ A slicker brush is not for pulling hair out —๐ it’s for removing the hair that is already loose,
not for tearing out new, beautiful coat ๐
๐ Real-life summary:
๐ two good slickers → easy life, ๐ one bad one → daily battle with the coat.๐ And in the end… the coat always wins. ๐
๐ชฎ Combs
๐ The same principle as with slicker brushes: it’s not about having many… ๐ it’s about having the right ones.
โ๏ธ Classic metal comb (butter-style). โ๏ธ Metal comb with a long handle. ๐ These are the basics. Used for the same purpose:
• preventing tangles, • working on those that are just starting to form.
โ What’s on the market and what actually works?
Let’s keep it practical:
๐น Fine-tooth comb ๐ in theory: for small tangles. ๐ก In practice: only useful for tiny knots involving a few hairs. The most used part (the tip) bends quickly. ๐ Result: a warped comb… and goodbye tool.
๐น Wide-tooth comb ๐ useful after applying a good amount of detangling spray, ๐ helps open small tangles.
โ But: ๐ over time, the same problem appears, the end teeth spread apart, because that’s the area doing all the work.
๐น Wide-tooth comb with rotating teeth ๐ now this is interesting. โ๏ธ Detangles better, โ๏ธ breaks less hair, โ๏ธ lasts longer.
๐ The best balance between efficiency and “survival”
๐น De-matting combs (cutting combs) ๐ here comes the truth: ๐ the fastest way to become your Toy Poodle’s enemy for an hour.
โ Low effectiveness on Toy Poodles, โ uneven results, โ the dog won’t forget it.
๐ก Much better: gently work the tangle apart with your fingers or carefully cut it. Instead of turning grooming into a negative experience for life. Real conclusion: ๐ fewer combs, but well chosen, calm technique and common sense.
๐ The goal is not to “win the battle”… it’s for your dog to be happy to come back tomorrow. ๐
โ๏ธ Scissors
๐ In short: the basic setup is to have these two:
โ๏ธ Straight scissors with rounded tips
โ๏ธ Curved scissors with rounded tips. Safety + precision.
๐ก Choosing the right scissors is not as simple as it seems.
Explaining it in text would take… half a page ๐
๐ That’s why we’ve prepared a video where we clearly show:
โ๏ธ how to choose scissors, โ๏ธ what details to look for,
โ๏ธ what to avoid. ๐ The video includes subtitles in multiple languages.
๐ฅ You can watch it here ๐
โ๏ธ Clippers
โ๏ธ Small clipper — for the face and paws. โ๏ธ Main clipper — for the rest of the work. ๐ What to look for: ๐ good reviews,
๐ blades that don’t overheat. ๐ก Important: the most expensive option is not always the best. ๐ We have an Aesculap (one of the most expensive brands) and we actually use it in our talks as an example of why it’s not always the right choice.๐
โ๏ธ We prefer cordless models — more convenient. ๐ But corded ones work perfectly fine, if that’s what you prefer.
๐จ Drying
There is no single “perfect” option here.๐ Each system has its pros and cons.
๐น Regular hair dryer (home use)๐ if you don’t have anything else, it works, โ๏ธ no need to spend money, โ๏ธ always available.
โ But: you need someone to hold and direct it or you need a stand. ๐ Drying can easily take 40–50 minutes.
๐น Dog dryer ๐ designed specifically for this type of coat. โ๏ธ Stronger airflow, โ๏ธ less noise,
โ๏ธ less hot air (safer), โ๏ธ often can be mounted or hung.
๐ Overall, more comfortable to use. โ But: you’ll need a somewhat
dedicated grooming space and often additional supports anyway.
๐ก Important reality: ๐ there is NO perfect dryer, neither expensive
nor cheap. The main issue is always the same: holding and directing
it while working.
๐น Dryer stands (wall, table, or hands-free types) โ๏ธ extremely helpful,
โ๏ธ free up one hand, โ๏ธ make the whole process much easier.
๐ Almost more important than the dryer itself. ๐
๐น Drying cages ๐ not recommended for Toy Poodles.
โ Not very effective, โ create stress, โ don’t allow you to work the coat.
๐ก And this is the key:๐ a poodle’s coat is dried by working it (brushing
and straightening) ๐ a drying cage is basically… a sauna. ๐ We have two…
and we hardly ever use them. It’s not about having the perfect dryer…
but about finding the most comfortable setup for you and your dog. ๐ And turning drying into a calm process, not a battle ๐
๐น Brush dryers (hot air brush / vacuum brush) ๐ This is another category that looks… amazing in ads ๐
We bought them when they first appeared ๐ and they cost almost like a plane wing ๐.
๐ก The idea sounds perfect: ๐ dryer + brush in one, directed airflow, no stands, no complications.
๐ You see it and think: “this is the ultimate solution.” ๐ Reality… not so magical.
It does NOT replace a dryer + slicker brush. Doesn’t straighten the coat properly. Lacks sufficient power.
๐ In practice: โ๏ธ only works on short coats โ๏ธ and already perfectly detangled hair. And of course…if the coat is already perfect and short… you barely need a dryer anyway. ๐ About the models: ๐ Small brush-shaped ones โ basically — money wasted.
Low power, poor control, very limited (almost zero) results.
Vacuum-style models โ๏ธ at least have stronger airflow โ๏ธ more functional.
๐ But still: ๐ they do NOT replace proper drying work. Great idea and execution… average. Can be useful as a ะดะพะฟะพะปะฝะตะฝะธะต (extra tool.)
But not as your main tool, because a poodle’s coat doesn’t dry on its own… it has to be worked. ๐
โ๏ธ Nail Trimming
Choosing the right tool for nail trimming, in the end,
๐ depends on how much you care about yourself… and your dog ๐
Because it almost always goes the same way: you cut a nail a bit too short…
and there’s blood. ๐ And then come the three classic reactions:
1๏ธโฃ “I’m never doing this again. Let the groomer handle it.”
2๏ธโฃ “I’m afraid to repeat it… I’ll just wait until the nails scratch the floor.”
3๏ธโฃ “What did I do wrong and how do I avoid it?”
๐ The third one is the right approach. ๐ โ๏ธ Basic tool:๐ a small nail
clipper, not too bulky. Allows you to see the nail better, gives you more
control with sucha small dog.โ But here’s the reality: ๐ sooner or later,
everyone makes a mistake and the bleeding happens again…
โ Why does it happen?๐ because you need to see where the quick (blood vessel) ends and with dark nails… that’s not easy.
๐ก Good news: ๐ nail clippers with a built-in light now exist, we’ve been using them
for a long time. And they make the process much easier. โ๏ธ Better visibility, โ๏ธ more precision,
โ๏ธ much less risk.Basically turning nail trimming into… almost blood-free. ๐
๐ก Real conclusion: ๐ small tool → more control, ๐ light → fewer mistakes.
A bit of practice → no drama. Because nail trimming shouldn’t be
๐ a stressful experience… neither for you nor for your dog. ๐
๐ช Working Comfort
If you want things to be easier: โ๏ธ a grooming table with a holding arm is ideal. โ But: professional tables take up a lot of space
and are not always practical at home. ๐ก What we use: Having our own grooming space for our Toy Poodles: ๐ we use a narrow wooden table fixed to the wall ๐ with a shelf above that includes lighting and a support arm. โ๏ธ Practical, โ๏ธ clean, โ๏ธ and visually nice. ๐ The goal is not a “professional setup” but a comfortable space where both you and the dog feel at ease. ๐
๐งด Accessories & Supplies
โ๏ธ Rubber bands and bows, โ๏ธ cotton pads, โ๏ธ dog wipes.
๐ Important: use separate products for eyes and for ears.
๐ก You don’t need everything at once. ๐ But choosing wisely from the start saves time, money, and mistakes.
