Poodle Sizes

Toy, Miniature, Medium, and Standard

Discover the differences between the poodle varieties, their official measurements, and how to estimate how big a puppy will grow.

The Poodle is one of the few breeds that comes in four different sizes: toy, miniature, medium, and standard. Although they all share the same standard, elegance, and character, the main difference between them is height.

According to the official FCI standard, each variety has a clearly defined size range. Understanding these differences is key to choosing the right poodle for your lifestyle, space, and needs.

Differences between poodle sizes.
Although all poodles share the same breed type, there are important practical differences between the sizes:

• The toy poodle is ideal for apartment living and easy travel
• The miniature poodle offers a perfect balance between size and sturdiness
• The medium poodle is more active and requires more space
• The standard poodle stands out for its presence and energy

Choosing the size depends not only on preference, but also on the family’s lifestyle.

Does a Teacup Poodle Exist?

The term “teacup” does not correspond to an official variety recognized by the FCI.

— It is mainly used for commercial purposes to describe very small dogs. However, what truly matters is not extreme size, but health, correct structure, and responsible breeding.

— A poodle that is too small may develop health problems, so it is always recommended to prioritize quality over size.

How to measure a Poodle correctly?

A poodle’s height is always measured at the withers, that is, from the ground to the highest point of the shoulders.

To measure correctly:
• The dog must be standing, straight, and relaxed
• The measurement is not taken to the head
• A flat surface should be used

An incorrect measurement can lead to confusion about the dog’s variety.

What can you use to measure a dog?

To measure a dog’s height accurately, there are options ranging from basic methods to more professional and modern tools:

• Flexible measuring tape — the most accessible and commonly used option at home
• Rigid tape measure or long ruler — provides more stable measurements if the dog stands still
• Measuring stick (dog height gauge) — a professional tool used by breeders and at dog shows
• Carpenter’s square or level against a wall — helps mark the exact height at the withers precisely
• Mobile measurement apps (AR) — use the phone’s camera to estimate height
• Digital laser measurers — offer a quick reference, although they require the dog to be well positioned

Professional tools, such as a measuring stick, are the most reliable when an exact measurement according to the standard is required.

At home, by combining a measuring tape with a wall or a square, you can achieve a result very close to the actual height.

Nowadays, it is also possible to measure a poodle using mobile applications with augmented reality (AR) technology.

Apps such as AR Ruler, AR Meter, or Smart Measure allow you to measure a dog’s height using the phone’s camera. These tools detect the ground and calculate the distance up to the dog’s withers.

Although they are very practical, it is important to keep in mind that their accuracy may vary. For precise results, it is always recommended to verify the measurement using traditional methods.

Common mistakes when measuring a dog (and how to avoid them)

Measuring a dog’s height may seem simple, but it is very easy to make mistakes that can completely change the result. These are the most common ones:

Measuring up to the head
The official height is measured at the withers, not at the head. This mistake can add several extra centimeters.

The dog is not standing straight
If the poodle is sitting, leaning, or moving, the measurement will be inaccurate. The dog should be standing, relaxed, and balanced.

Measuring on an uneven surface
Carpets, grass, or sloped ground can affect the measurement. It should always be done on a flat surface.

Not locating the withers correctly
Many people do not correctly identify this point. The withers are the highest part of the shoulders, not the neck or the back.

How big will a poodle puppy grow?

Knowing how big a poodle puppy will grow is one of the most important questions before choosing one. However, it is important to understand that it cannot be predicted with complete accuracy.

Even so, there are several key factors that allow for a fairly reliable estimate.

Factors that determine the final size

A poodle’s growth depends mainly on:

• The size of the parents
If both parents are toy, the puppy will most likely be toy as well.

• The genetic line
Not only the parents matter, but also grandparents and previous generations.

• Development during the first weeks
A puppy that grows quickly at the beginning will not always be larger, but it can give clues.

• Bone structure
The paws, bone density, and body proportions help estimate adult size.

• Nutrition and care
A well-nourished puppy will develop properly, but it will not change its genetics.

Key stages in growth

The most important growth in a poodle occurs during the first months:

• 0–2 months → rapid growth
• 2–6 months → main development
• 6–12 months → slower growth
• 12 months → nearly final size

In toy poodles, the final size is usually established earlier than in larger varieties.
